Stanford Engineering - Equity and Inclusion Initiatives
Website Refresh
Stanford’s School of Engineering had a number of excellent programs for students through their Equity and Inclusion Initiatives—but the site needed an update. Working together with the Equity and Inclusion Initiatives team, I delivered a full site refresh in two phases.
I made sure each program page had a summary paragraph so that those skimming the website would have a good grasp of the different programs available.
The first phase covered their 15 program and funding pages, and included nitty-gritty details like deadlines, application information, and program activities. The goal of this phase was to bring clarity and consistency to the pages with clear language and a unifying format.
In addition to updating the copy, the focus on the program pages was to structure the flow of information. Sections like “Questions?” and “Resources” were moved to the bottom of each page, and formatted in postcard blocks.
After talking with the E&I team, we realized there was a need for a page that gathered their latest events and student highlights. So I created a new page, “Our Student Community.”
The About page was very important to the E&I team, and myself. We worked together to edit down their copy and bring clarity to their mission.
The second phase was focused on the landing page and other high-level pages. Since these pages were a first-impression for the Initiatives, it was important that the approach be more story-based. To get at the core of the Equity and Inclusion Initiatives, I asked questions about their mission, audience, tone, and the direction the E&I team might want to take in the future.
I restructured the high-level program pages so that each program would have a distinct graphic image, title, and description. By using a different type of web element for the programs, it distinguished them from other features, like an article or link to a student society.
The end result was 23 updated web pages that made for a streamlined, unified site. It was a pleasure to highlight the numerous programs, resources, and people of the Equity and Inclusion Initiatives, and to help the E&I team tell their story.
